Pontifex – the Bridge Builder

The English equivalent of this word is 'pontiff'; the Italian is pontefice.

In ancient Rome, the highest–ranking priests of the state religion were collectively known as the Collegium Pontificum – the College of Pontiffs. The leader of the college body was known as the pontifex maximus ('greatest priest'), and this term has also been used in the Roman Catholic church to refer to the Pope.

The last two Popes – Benedict XVI and Francis – have used 'pontifex' as their twitter handle.
